Healing Childhood Trauma with EMDR: A Path to Freedom

Jeanne S. Lankin, LCSW

This blog is written in conjunction with a current client of mine whose input is invaluable in creating it.

Childhood should be a time of safety, love, and exploration. But for many survivors of abuse, those early years are marked by fear, pain, and helplessness. This was the case for “Sarah”, a woman who endured repeated physical abuse at the hands of her biological father and, as a child, witnessed; ongoing abuse of her mother through hitting, punching, throwing her down the stairs, choking her in a violent rage to name a few “lowlights”.Sarah, herself experienced; regular beatings with a belt, in the basement, away from any eye witnesses, regular emotional and verbal abuse and regular disappearing from her life. These experiences left deep emotional scars, shaping her nervous system, emotions, relationships, and overall well-being well into adulthood. However, healing is possible. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy offers a powerful and effective path toward reclaiming one’s life from the shadows of trauma.

Sarah’s Story: The Lasting Impact of Childhood Abuse and Witnessed Violence

Sarah grew up in a home where fear was constant. Every blow she suffered, every scream she heard, and the terrifying image of her mother gasping for air left an imprint on her soul. She learned to be hypervigilant, always bracing for the next attack. She internalized feelings of helplessness and guilt, believing she was powerless to protect herself or her mother. As she grew older, these unresolved traumas manifested in different ways:

  • Flashbacks and nightmares of her childhood home where most of the abuse took place

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Struggles with self worth, self esteem and identity

  • Chronic anxiety and dysphoria

  • Trouble regulating emotions

  • Physical symptoms such as chronic pain and headaches and migraines

  • Fear of confrontation and avoidance of conflict

  • Fear of her children not knowing safety

How EMDR Helped Sarah Heal

EMDR therapy is a research-backed, structured approach that helps individuals process traumatic memories and integrate them in a way that reduces their emotional charge. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require survivors to relive their trauma in extensive detail. Instead, it facilitates the brain’s natural healing process through guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones.

For Sarah, EMDR helped by:

  1. Reducing Emotional Distress: The traumatic memories that once held her hostage, no longer triggered distress as if they were happening in the present.

  2. Breaking Negative Core Beliefs: Through EMDR, Sarah transformed deeply ingrained thoughts like “I am not safe, I am not in control, I can not protect myself” into “It’s over now I am safe, I can learn to protect myself, I am now in control”.

  3. Restoring a Sense of Safety: She gradually felt less hypervigilant, more patient, calmer which allows her to feel grounded and secure in daily life.

  4. Enhancing Resilience and Self-Worth: As she worked through her trauma, Sarah regained confidence, self-trust, and a sense of control over her future.

A Journey Toward Healing

Healing from childhood trauma is not about erasing the past—it’s about reprocessing the past which allows one to reclaim the present and future. Survivors like Sarah deserve to live free from the emotional weight of their past experiences. EMDR offers a structured and compassionate approach to healing, allowing individuals to break free from trauma’s hold and move toward a life of greater peace, connection, and self-empowerment.

In the words of Sarah herself “You are the author of your own story and have license to rewrite it!”.

If you or someone you love has experienced childhood trauma, know that healing is possible. EMDR therapy provides a proven path to transformation, helping survivors step into a life where their past no longer defines them. You are not alone, and you deserve to heal.
